Aviation Weather Center (AWC) - High Quality Image Viewing/Printing

If print quality or printing the entire image on a single sheet (A4 or 8 1/2x11) is important, you may want to consider using an external application or plug-in to view and print images.

The following external image viewers are available as freeware and may be downloaded. The listing does not imply an endorsement by the NWS or the AWC. We simply list these examples for your convenience in obtaining flight information.

Irfan View 32 (prints clear charts 8 1/2x11) http://www.irfanview.com/	Use manufacturer's download and installation instructions. Follow directions below to have your Internet browser handle images with the viewer.
PolyView (must register to print) http://www.polybytes.com/	Use manufacturer's download and installation instructions. Follow directions below to have your Internet browser handle images with the viewer.
Viewer/Xnview v1.09 (view only) http://perso.wanadoo.fr/pierre.g/html/downloadgb.html#view	Download and unzip the file. Follow instructions below to have your Internet browser handle images with the viewer. Once that process is finished, complete the following: Bring up the Xnview window Click on the 'Option' pull down menu Click on 'Install...', once that window is displayed, click "Add All" Click 'OK'

How to let External Viewers handle images automatically from your Internet Browser
Netscape Communicator 4.5+	Click the 'Edit' pull down menu Click 'Preferences...' Next to 'Navigator' click the '+' sign to reveal subtopics and then click 'Applications' Scroll down in Applications window until 'GIF' is visible, highlight with the mouse and click the "Edit..." button. If 'GIF' is not in the list you will need to add, see below. Ensure that the radio button next to 'Application:' is selected and click the "Browse..." button Find the folder to which you downloaded or unzipped your image viewer, highlight and click "Open" then "OK" To Add Applications click "New Type..." and: Enter 'GIF' for Description of type: Enter 'gif' for File extension: Enter 'image/gif' for MIME Type: Click the "Browse..." button Find the folder to which you downloaded or unzipped your image viewer, highlight and click "Open" then "OK"
Internet Explorer 5.x (SEE NOTE BELOW)	From the Windows desktop access 'My Computer' Click the 'View' pull down menu Click 'Options...' Click on the 'File Types' folder tab Scroll down in the Registered file types: window until 'GIF' is visible, highlight with the mouse and click the "Edit..." button. Again, click the "Edit..." button and then click the "Browse..." button to change the application Find the folder to which you downloaded or unzipped your image viewer, highlight and click "Open" then "OK" Click "Close" and then "Close" again To Add Applications click "New Type..." and: Enter 'GIF' for Description of type: Enter 'gif' for Associated extension: Enter 'image/gif' for Content Type (MIME): Use the given Default Extension for Content Type: Click the "New..." button to add Actions: Under Action: type the word 'open' and then click the "Browse..." button Find the folder to which you downloaded or unzipped your image viewer, highlight and click "Open" then "OK" Click the "New..." button again Type the word 'print' (for Irfan View 32) and repeat the above process Click the "New..." button again Type the word 'printto' (for Irfan View 32) and repeat the above process Click "OK" and then "Close"
NOTE:IE 5.x does not support the above external viewers with images that it is capable of handling (i.e. JPEG, GIF). You may still use them for these image types by completing the above procedures and saving the image to a folder (right click mouse over image and select 'Save Picture As...'). Using Windows Explorer, highlight folder and hit 'Enter.' This will allow viewing/printing of the image with the external viewer.

How to let External Viewers handle images automatically from your Internet Browser

Netscape Communicator 4.5+

Click the 'Edit' pull down menu
Click 'Preferences...'
Next to 'Navigator' click the '+' sign to reveal subtopics and then click 'Applications'
Scroll down in Applications window until 'GIF' is visible, highlight with the mouse and click the "Edit..." button. If 'GIF' is not in the list you will need to add, see below.
Ensure that the radio button next to 'Application:' is selected and click the "Browse..." button
Find the folder to which you downloaded or unzipped your image viewer, highlight and click "Open" then "OK"

To Add Applications click "New Type..." and:

Enter 'GIF' for Description of type:
Enter 'gif' for File extension:
Enter 'image/gif' for MIME Type:
Click the "Browse..." button
Find the folder to which you downloaded or unzipped your image viewer, highlight and click "Open" then "OK"

Internet Explorer 5.x

From the Windows desktop access 'My Computer'
Click the 'View' pull down menu
Click 'Options...'
Click on the 'File Types' folder tab

Again, click the "Edit..." button and then click the "Browse..." button to change the application
Find the folder to which you downloaded or unzipped your image viewer, highlight and click "Open" then "OK"
Click "Close" and then "Close" again

To Add Applications click "New Type..." and:

Enter 'GIF' for Description of type:
Enter 'gif' for Associated extension:
Enter 'image/gif' for Content Type (MIME):
Use the given Default Extension for Content Type:
Click the "New..." button to add Actions:
Under Action: type the word 'open' and then click the "Browse..." button
Find the folder to which you downloaded or unzipped your image viewer, highlight and click "Open" then "OK"
Click the "New..." button again
Type the word 'print' (for Irfan View 32) and repeat the above process
Click the "New..." button again
Type the word 'printto' (for Irfan View 32) and repeat the above process
Click "OK" and then "Close"
