Combining Radar/Lightning - Benefits

The image below is a magnified view of the national radar mosaic. Click on this image to see the gridded lightning field. Click again to toggle back to the original image. Looking at the lightning field it is obvious that there is missing echo in the radar image. This could be misinterpreted by the user or could cause problems for the algorithm trying to track the convection.
This next image shows the result of combining the radar and lightning fields. This is a better representation of what is really going on in this region and also allowed a forecast to be produced.
